Seal of the Prophets; forefather of the Imams

Muhammad ibn Abdullah, the final Messenger of God, was raised an orphan in Mecca and known for his truthfulness before receiving revelation at age forty in the Cave of Hira. He established the message of Islamic monotheism, migrated to Medina, and - as related in Shia sources - designated Ali ibn Abi Talib as his successor at Ghadir Khumm.

Emphasis on the oneness of God, universal mercy and ethics, and - per Shia tradition - linking guidance after him to holding fast to 'the two weighty things': the Qur'an and his household.
